| Concept of Examen: |
| The work is about the choreography of form. I try to use forms, usually abstract, as vehicles for identities and do this by exploring, amongst other things, composition and the shape of the individual forms themselves.
I find the shapes of the forms an important element in the creation of this identity. I focus on the small details such as a tiny kink in a, what seems like, straight line or a curved edge disrupting a form made otherwise of straight lines. In this way I try to find the boundaries between straight and bent or curved and the effect these states have on the character of the form and work as a whole.
When creating a work colour is also an element that has an influence on the result. I approach this in a very intuitive way. Thus far, I have no rules that I follow and simply like to experiment until I have found what is, in my view, most appropriate in the context.
In addition, in my work I explore the composition as this is key, for me, to the identity of the form. In my opinion this is similar to the way human beings interact with body language. The fine line between two forms touching or not touching is something which I investigate and use as a way of creating a mood or feeling. The distance between forms can suggest many different emotions and result in different connotations and I find it interesting to look into these effects.
Dance has a great influence on the way in which I approach my work. I dance and it is important for the way I draw and create images. It has an influence on the way I approach the composition, line and movement. The movements have made lasting impressions on my physical memory and I enjoy using this to explore my own drawing style.
I recently graduated in Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in The Hague, The Netherlands. |
