Painting
Concept of Examen:
The presentation of the human body is the central point around which my work revolves. Its not just the human body which interests me, but more the presentation of the human body that particularly fascinates me . I than often think of the 'Christ on the cross' paintings. The fleshy spectacle of our mortality. When I first saw the unfinished works of Michelangelo in the tomb of pope Julius II at the Galleria Academia the raw force of them hit me. I experience the same when I look at the old Greek statues which are often missing legs or arms. This is why there are similar “amputations” to be seen in my own work. The missing limbs makes the body so much more intense. I like to think that I use my paint leaves not in any suggestive manner. This enables me to paint on the that fine between pleasure and pain, between beauty and ugliness. Because every work that shows great beauty must also have some ugliness. It should hurt at least a little in order give the beauty its final boost to shine.
