Painting
Concept of Examen:
Points of Light consists of three installed works around the stairwell of the Sculpture Gallery and has been executed for the RCA Degree Show 2011. The central 'Reactor Core' hangs ominously over you as you enter the space. It holds the tips of the copper control rods in potent suspense above the large mass of cast lead at the heart of the stainless steel structure. The reactor core is then viewed from three further sites. Firstly, through the double 'Bracket telescope' on the tower landing, placing the subatomic processes of fission decay into the greater constellation of nuclear processes at another scale- the stars. Secondly, through the Astrolabe-lensed brass telescope on the first floor landing, relating the mystery of the points of light at the tips of the control rods to our historic search for patterns of knowledge in the mystery of the unknown. Finally, from through the first floor window in the 'control room'. The core is placed into its industrial home, controlled and passive- but in its intuitive incomprehensibly sill beyond our reach. The Control rooms series has followed the artist on his many trips to large energy and industrial sites over the last five years. Recording the points of interface between humanity and the ever more complex and counter intuitive machines we rely upon. They are composed to capture the curiously sensible and timeless layout of these spaces, in contrast to the sophisticated complexity of the processes they control.
