| I derive the inspiration for the figures in my portraits from the feelings of anxiety I experience when in public. Normally I am able to suppress these feelings by means of sheer self-control, but by focusing on them in my work I am able to lay them bare. I am that figure, so I cannot dismiss any of these works as mere portraits. They are, quite literally, self-portraits as well.
Dealing with themes that mainly revolve around contrasts, such as man and society, order and chaos, results in an imagery in which I play with familiar elements such as portraiture versus the disturbing presence exuded by the figures in my portraits.
What once started with the drawing of small self portraits that revealed to me my own darkest side has unleashed in me a fascination with everyone’s darker side. My fascination with the naïve and the uncanny is a strong element in all the decisions I make in my painting, and that plays an important role in the resulting imagery. But more than anything else, my portraits focus on an encounter: an encounter between consciousness and unconsciousness, an encounter between two worlds, an encounter between me and the public. |
